Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet all encrypt call traffic between your device and their servers by default. That fact alone leads a lot of people to assume a VPN is redundant for video calls, and for the core question of “can someone read my call,” that’s mostly true. But a VPN still does real work in a few specific situations video call apps don’t cover on their own.
What video call apps already protect
Zoom, Teams, and Meet all use encryption in transit, meaning your ISP, the coffee shop Wi-Fi operator, or anyone else sniffing traffic between you and the call server can’t read the audio, video, or chat content of your meeting. This isn’t a VPN’s job to add, it’s already handled by the app itself, and running a VPN on top of it doesn’t meaningfully increase the security of the call content.
Zoom in particular has offered genuine end-to-end encryption (not just encryption to Zoom’s own servers) as an option since 2020, meaning even Zoom itself can’t access the call content when it’s enabled. Teams and Meet handle encryption slightly differently but achieve a comparable practical result for most business and personal use.
Where a VPN actually adds something
Hiding that you’re on a call at all, from your network operator. Encryption protects content, not metadata. Your ISP, employer’s IT department, or a public Wi-Fi operator can generally see that you’re connecting to Zoom’s or Microsoft’s servers and roughly how much data you’re sending, even if they can’t see what’s said. A VPN hides that traffic pattern from anyone watching at the network level between you and your VPN provider, useful if you specifically don’t want your network operator to know you’re on a call, or which service you’re using.
Public Wi-Fi generally. This isn’t specific to video calls, but it’s the most common real reason people reach for a VPN before a work call at an airport or hotel. Public networks carry broader risks than call content interception (rogue access points, other devices on the same network), and a VPN’s general encryption tunnel addresses those regardless of what app you’re using.
Bypassing a network-level block. Some corporate networks, school Wi-Fi, or country-level restrictions block Zoom, Teams, or Meet outright. A VPN routes around that block the same way it does for any other blocked service, letting the call go through by making it look like ordinary encrypted traffic to a VPN server rather than a recognizable call to a blocked destination.
Joining a call that’s region-locked to a different country. Rare, but it happens with some webinar and conferencing platforms that restrict access by geography. A VPN server in the right country resolves this the same way it does for region-locked streaming content.

Where a VPN adds cost without adding benefit
Latency is the real tradeoff, and video calls are unusually sensitive to it compared to browsing or even streaming. A VPN adds at least one extra network hop, typically 10 to 30ms depending on protocol and server distance, and on a call that’s already borderline (unstable home Wi-Fi, a distant call server, a loaded network) that extra latency can be the difference between a smooth call and one with audio lag or dropped frames.
If your only goal is protecting call content from interception, a VPN isn’t adding a security benefit the app doesn’t already provide, so for a routine call on a trusted home or office network, running one is mostly just absorbing latency for no practical gain.
The protocol choice matters more here than usual
If you decide a VPN makes sense for your situation (public Wi-Fi, hiding the traffic pattern, or bypassing a block), protocol choice matters more for video calls than for almost any other use case, since call quality is unusually sensitive to both latency and jitter (inconsistent delay, not just average delay). WireGuard-based protocols, NordLynx, Lightway, and plain WireGuard, add meaningfully less of both than OpenVPN or IKEv2. NordVPN’s NordLynx and Proton VPN’s WireGuard implementation both performed well in our testing for real-time traffic specifically.
Also pick a server as close to your actual location as possible rather than one chosen for another purpose (streaming or price tricks). For video calls, proximity beats every other server selection factor.
What to do if your employer requires a VPN for calls
Some companies mandate a corporate VPN for all work traffic, including video calls, for compliance or data governance reasons that have nothing to do with call content encryption specifically. In that situation the choice isn’t yours to make on quality grounds, the company’s VPN is a policy requirement, and any latency cost is the tradeoff for whatever compliance goal it serves. If call quality on the mandated VPN is consistently poor, that’s worth raising with IT directly, since a poorly configured corporate VPN gateway is a common and fixable cause of call degradation, not something to work around unilaterally.
For a routine video call on a trusted network, a VPN doesn't add meaningful protection Zoom, Teams, and Meet don't already provide through their own encryption, and it does add latency that hurts a use case that's unusually sensitive to it. Reach for one specifically for public Wi-Fi, for hiding the fact that you're on a call from your network operator, or to get around a network-level block. When you do use one, pick a WireGuard-based protocol and the closest available server, call quality depends on both more than most other VPN use cases.
A quick way to test before an important call
If you’re unsure whether a VPN will help or hurt a specific call, don’t guess. Run a quick speed and latency test to the region your call server is likely in (usually wherever the meeting host or platform’s regional infrastructure sits), first without the VPN, then with it connected to your closest server. If the VPN adds only a few milliseconds and you have a specific reason to use it (public Wi-Fi, hiding the traffic pattern, or a network block), the tradeoff is clearly worth it. If the difference is large enough that you’d notice audio lag or frozen video, that’s a sign to skip the VPN for that particular call unless the network you’re on genuinely requires it to connect at all.
When the call app itself, not the VPN, is the weak link
It’s worth remembering that a VPN only protects the network path, it does nothing about a compromised device, a poorly secured meeting link shared publicly, or weak call settings like an easily guessable meeting ID with no waiting room. Zoom-bombing incidents, for instance, were almost never a VPN or encryption failure, they were a settings failure: public meeting links with no password and no waiting room enabled. If your goal is broader call security rather than just network-level privacy, meeting settings and access controls do more heavy lifting than a VPN ever will.
A related, often overlooked step: check what a meeting platform shows other participants about your connection. Some tools display a rough location or network name to hosts or fellow attendees, information a VPN can mask if that’s a concern for you specifically, separate from any latency or throttling question. It’s a minor point next to the bigger settings-based risks, but worth knowing about if privacy from other call participants, not just your network operator, is part of what you’re trying to protect.
