Surfshark announced on July 16, 2026 that FastTrack, its real-time route-optimization feature, now runs on more than half of its global server network, over 2,000 servers across every continent. That’s up from just three launch locations a year ago. The company says the feature delivers speeds up to 70% faster than standard routing. Here’s what FastTrack actually is, and what the expansion changes in practice.
What FastTrack actually does
FastTrack is not a new VPN protocol. It’s a routing layer built on top of Nexus, Surfshark’s multi-server infrastructure that treats the network as a mesh of interchangeable nodes rather than a fixed point-to-point tunnel. Probes distributed across that network constantly measure latency and real-world conditions on every available path, and FastTrack’s algorithm picks whichever route performs best at that moment, not necessarily the shortest one on a map.
Karolis Kaciulis, Surfshark’s leading system engineer, put it plainly: a longer physical path can still win if it runs over better routers or higher-capacity cables. That’s the core idea. Traditional VPN routing sends your traffic down one path and leaves it there for the session. FastTrack keeps checking and reroutes automatically when a faster option opens up.
The same Nexus foundation gives FastTrack a side benefit beyond raw speed: redundancy. If one route degrades or drops, traffic shifts to another automatically, which should mean fewer dead connections during peak hours. Surfshark also argues that because FastTrack traffic often moves through a different data center network than a typical ISP path, it’s less exposed to the throttling some ISPs apply to VPN traffic.
From 3 servers to 2,000 in under a year
FastTrack launched quietly in August 2025 on exactly three locations: Sydney, Seattle, and Vancouver. The July 2026 update converted more than 2,000 of Surfshark’s roughly 4,500 exit nodes to FastTrack-optimized routing, spanning all continents where Surfshark operates. If you’re a subscriber, the fastest way to check is to look for the FastTrack icon next to a location in the server list inside the app.
That’s a genuinely fast rollout for infrastructure work, and it follows a broader server network expansion Surfshark announced back in October 2025. Between that buildout and FastTrack, the company has spent the better part of a year quietly rebuilding the routing layer most users never think about until it’s slow.
The catch: Mac and iOS only, for now
FastTrack currently works only in Surfshark’s Mac and iOS apps. Windows, Android, and Linux users don’t have it yet, and Surfshark hasn’t given a firm date for when that changes. A company spokesperson told TechRadar that user feedback is actively shaping where the rollout goes next, which is a reasonable read given how loudly Android users have already been asking for it online.
The “more than half” framing is worth sitting with too. Real, but partial. If your usual server isn’t in the converted half of the network yet, you won’t see any difference, and Surfshark hasn’t published a per-location list beyond the in-app icon.
FastTrack isn’t Dausos, and it isn’t Everlink
Surfshark has shipped three speed-and-reliability projects in roughly a year, and it’s easy to mix them up since they all promise faster or more stable connections.

Dausos, which we covered when its June update finally fixed the connectivity bugs from its beta launch, works at the protocol level: how your data gets encrypted and tunneled. FastTrack works one layer up: which physical path your already-encrypted traffic takes to get there. You could, in theory, be running Dausos over a FastTrack-optimized route on a Mac and get both benefits stacked, though Surfshark hasn’t explicitly confirmed the two combine cleanly yet.
Why a routing layer matters more than it sounds
Route optimization sounds like a backend detail until you’re the one waiting on a buffering wheel during a big match or watching a download crawl. A congested or badly-peered route between you and a VPN server shows up as exactly that: slower Netflix load times, dropped frames on a video call, or added latency that matters in a competitive game. FastTrack targets that specific failure mode instead of just adding server capacity, which is a different (and arguably more useful) lever than the raw server-count arms race most providers lean on.
A 70% speed claim from any provider deserves the usual skepticism until independent labs run their own numbers on the expanded network. If you’re on Windows, Android, or Linux, the underlying network is still faster than it was a year ago even without the labeled feature, since Surfshark’s broader server expansion benefits everyone; you’re just waiting on the client-side rollout to catch up.
FastTrack is a legitimate infrastructure upgrade, not a marketing repaint: real-time route optimization across half of Surfshark's network in under a year is a fast rollout, and the mechanism behind the 70% speed claim holds up logically even before independent labs confirm the number. The real limitation is platform support. Mac and iOS users get it today; everyone else is waiting on a rollout with no announced date.
