How this actually works

Sharing from macOS
On a Mac, go to System Settings, then General, then Sharing, and select Internet Sharing. Choose your VPN connection as the source under “Share your connection from,” then check the box for Wi-Fi under “To computers using,” and click Wi-Fi Options to set a network name and password. Turn on Internet Sharing, and any device that joins that new Wi-Fi network will route through your Mac’s active VPN connection.

Sharing from Android
Android’s approach depends on your VPN provider, since Android’s built-in hotspot feature does not always route hotspot traffic through an active VPN connection by default on every version. Check your VPN app’s settings for an option specifically labeled “allow LAN traffic” or “share over hotspot,” which several providers, including NordVPN and ProtonVPN, now include directly in their Android apps. If your provider doesn’t offer this natively, a workaround is enabling Android’s Wi-Fi hotspot first, then connecting the VPN afterward, though results vary by phone manufacturer and Android version.
Sharing from iPhone
iOS is the most restrictive of the four platforms here. Apple’s Personal Hotspot feature does not reliably route hotspot traffic through an active VPN connection for connected devices, regardless of provider, due to how iOS handles VPN tunnels at the system level. A note on security when sharing a hotspot
Whenever you create a hotspot, even one carrying VPN-protected traffic, always set a strong password on it rather than leaving it open. An open hotspot lets nearby devices join and use your shared connection, and while your internet traffic itself stays encrypted by the VPN, an unwanted device on your hotspot can still see and interact with other devices you’ve connected to that same local network, which is a separate risk from anything the VPN itself protects against.
Why not just use a travel router instead?

Sharing a VPN connection from your phone’s hotspot drains its battery noticeably faster than normal hotspot use, since the phone is simultaneously running the VPN encryption and acting as a wireless access point for other devices. If you’re relying on this setup for more than a short session, keep the sharing phone plugged in where possible. Connected devices show no internet access: confirm the VPN is still connected on the sharing device itself; if the VPN drops, shared devices lose access too since they have no independent connection of their own.
Speeds are noticeably slower than expected: hotspot sharing adds a layer of overhead on top of the VPN’s own speed cost, so expect a bigger drop than using the VPN directly on one device. Choose a VPN with strong baseline speeds, like NordVPN or Mullvad, to minimize the compounded effect.
The shared device shows the wrong location or fails a streaming geo-check: some streaming platforms detect the double layer of connection sharing and treat it more suspiciously than a direct VPN connection.
