Cancelling CyberGhost takes two separate actions, and most people only do one. Turning off auto-renewal stops future charges. Getting your money back is a separate request you have to make to CyberGhost (or to Apple or Google, depending on where you paid), and it has a deadline: 45 days on most plans, 14 days on monthly plans.

Here’s how to do both without losing the refund.

Before you start: check where you paid

This decides everything. CyberGhost can’t refund a purchase it didn’t process.

  • Bought on cyberghostvpn.com? You cancel and claim the refund with CyberGhost.
  • Bought in the iPhone or iPad App Store? You cancel in your Apple settings and ask Apple for the refund.
  • Bought in Google Play? You cancel in the Play Store and request the refund through Google.

Not sure? Search your email for the receipt. A CyberGhost receipt with an order number means you paid on the website. An Apple or Google receipt means the store handled it.

Check your refund deadline

According to Engadget’s January 2026 guide, CyberGhost’s refund rules are:

PlanRefund window
Monthly plan14 days
All longer plans (1 year, 2 years and more)45 days

After that, no refund. The 45-day window is the longest in our comparison database, where most providers offer 30 days and NordVPN offers 60. But the 14-day rule on monthly plans catches people out, because they assume the 45 days applies to everything.

Count from your purchase date, not from the day you first opened the app.

Before cancelling: is it fixable?

Many people cancel because one thing doesn’t work: a streaming service shows an error, or speeds drop in the evening. Before you give up, try a different server in the same country, switch protocol to WireGuard, and use CyberGhost’s servers labelled for the streaming service you want. If that fixes it, you keep a VPN that’s already paid for. If it doesn’t, you’ve lost nothing, as long as you’re still inside the refund window.

Step 1: Turn off auto-renewal (website purchase)

  1. Go to cyberghostvpn.com and log in to My Account.
  2. Click the CyberGhost logo next to your email address at the top right, then choose Subscriptions.
  3. Select your subscription and click Cancel Subscription.
  4. Confirm with Continue to Cancel.

Billing stops, and you keep access until the end of the period you paid for. This step alone does not refund you. If you’re inside the refund window and want your money back, go on to step 2.

Step 1 (alternative): Cancel on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Select CyberGhost and tap Cancel Subscription.

For the refund, go to Apple’s “Report a Problem” page with the Apple ID you used, find the CyberGhost purchase and request a refund. Apple decides, not CyberGhost.

Step 1 (alternative): Cancel on Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.
  2. Go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select CyberGhost and tap Cancel subscription.

The refund request also goes through Google Play, from your order history.

Step 2: Request your refund from CyberGhost

For website purchases, you have three ways to ask:

  • Live chat: the chat button at the bottom right of cyberghostvpn.com. This is usually the fastest route. CyberGhost scores 5/5 on customer support in our database, with 24/7 chat.
  • Support ticket from the website’s help section.
  • Email to support@cyberghost.ro.

Have your order number ready, and say clearly that you want a refund under the money-back guarantee, not just a cancellation. Support agents sometimes offer a discount or a free extension to keep you. If you want the refund, politely decline and repeat the request.

How long the money takes to reach you depends on how you paid. Card refunds go through your bank’s processing time, so don’t panic if it’s not instant.

Step 3 (optional): Delete your account

If you’re done with CyberGhost for good, you can delete the account once the subscription is cancelled:

  1. Log in on cyberghostvpn.com and open your profile.
  2. Click the small Delete My Account link below the login area.
  3. Confirm on the next page.

Cancel auto-renewal before you delete. Deleting the account first can leave a subscription running in the background, and that’s a billing headache nobody needs. Also note that deleted usernames can’t be reused.

What happens after you ask for a refund

Expect a short exchange with support. They’ll confirm your order, may ask why you’re leaving, and will then process the refund to the original payment method. Once the refund goes through, your subscription ends, so don’t request it until you’ve set up whatever you’re switching to.

If you paid with a card, the money goes back to that card; if you paid with PayPal, it goes back to PayPal. Keep the support chat transcript or the email thread until you see the money arrive.

Past the deadline?

If you’re beyond 45 days (or 14 days on a monthly plan), CyberGhost’s policy says no refund. You can still turn off auto-renewal so the next term doesn’t charge you, and keep using the VPN until your paid period runs out. Don’t file a chargeback with your bank just because you missed the window: that’s meant for unauthorised payments, and it can get your account closed without settling anything.

The exception is a renewal you didn’t expect. If CyberGhost renewed you automatically and you contact support quickly, it’s worth asking politely. You’re not guaranteed anything, but a short, clear message gives you the best chance.

Cancelling a free trial

CyberGhost’s free trial is very short (1 day on the website in our data, longer on some mobile app stores). Trials started through Apple or Google convert into paid subscriptions automatically. If you’re only testing, set a reminder and cancel in your App Store or Play Store subscriptions before the trial ends, using the steps above.

Mistakes that cost people their refund

Waiting until day 44. Request the refund a few days before the deadline. If support needs extra information, you want time to reply.

Assuming cancelling equals refunding. It doesn’t. Cancelling only stops the next payment.

Asking the wrong company. App Store and Google Play purchases must be refunded by Apple or Google.

Mixing up plan lengths. Monthly plan? You have 14 days, not 45.

Why people cancel CyberGhost, and what to switch to

CyberGhost scores 3.58/5 in our database. It’s a decent streaming VPN (4/5 on streaming) with very simple apps. The usual reasons people leave are its parent company, Kape Technologies (1/5 on ownership transparency), its last no-logs audit dating from 2012 in our data, and renewal prices that jump after the first term. Our CyberGhost review covers all of this in detail.

If you want something that scores higher, two options with long enough guarantees to test properly:

NordVPN scores 4.63/5, is 5/5 on streaming and comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee, even longer than CyberGhost’s. Proton VPN scores 4.24/5, has a 30-day guarantee and a free plan, so you can try it without paying at all.

Our verdict

Cancelling CyberGhost is quick, but the refund is a separate step. Turn off auto-renewal where you paid (website, App Store or Google Play), then ask for your money back before the deadline: 45 days on long plans, 14 days on monthly ones. Use live chat, keep your order number handy, and decline the retention offer if you want the refund.
