Best VPN for Zattoo in 2026: Watching Swiss and German TV Abroad (and Zattoo's VPN Ban)

Zattoo is how a lot of Swiss, German and Austrian households watch TV without a cable box. It also has some of the strictest rules we’ve seen for use abroad: Swiss subscribers lose live TV entirely outside Switzerland, and Zattoo’s terms explicitly ban VPNs. So before we recommend a VPN, here’s what Zattoo actually allows, where a VPN helps, and what you risk.

Where Zattoo works, and where it doesn’t

Zattoo operates in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. According to Zattoo’s support page on using the service abroad, your “region of use” is the country where you registered your account. Outside that country, the rules depend on where you’re from.

German accounts can stream inside the EU, plus Norway, Iceland and some EU overseas territories such as the Canary Islands and Madeira, for up to 90 days per trip. This follows EU portability rules.

Swiss accounts get far less. Outside Switzerland, only your recordings are available. Live TV, Replay, Restart and on-demand content are all blocked. Switzerland isn’t in the EU, so the EU portability regulation doesn’t protect Swiss subscribers.

Everyone abroad needs an active paid subscription, has to have installed the app at home, and can’t register or subscribe from abroad.

And then there’s the line that matters most for this article: Zattoo lists “no VPN, proxy, hosting or Private Relay” as a condition of use.

So should you use a VPN with Zattoo?

Let’s be straight about it. Using a VPN with Zattoo breaks its terms. The realistic consequence is a blocked stream, and in theory Zattoo could suspend an account it believes is abusing the rules. We haven’t seen reports of Zattoo pursuing individual subscribers, but you should know the rule exists before you rely on a workaround.

Here’s how we’d think about it by situation:

• German subscriber on holiday in Spain or Italy: don’t use a VPN. Portability already covers you, and a VPN would only get you flagged.
• Swiss subscriber abroad: a VPN connected to a Swiss server is the only way to get live channels back through Zattoo. You’re paying for the subscription, but you’re also going against Zattoo’s terms. Your call.
• German subscriber outside the EU (US, UK, Switzerland, Asia): same situation as a Swiss subscriber abroad.
• Anyone without a Zattoo subscription: a VPN won’t help, since you can’t sign up from abroad and payment methods are checked.

If you do decide to use a VPN, you need fast servers in Switzerland or Germany (depending on your account), IP addresses that aren’t already flagged, and apps for the device you watch on. Zattoo runs on smart TVs, Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV, so router or TV-app support matters.

Unlimited devices means you can cover the TV, the tablets and everyone’s phones on one account. Surfshark scores 4.5/5 on streaming and 5/5 on speed, and it has apps for Fire TV and Android TV. The first year costs $59.76.

ExpressVPN: very good for streaming, pricier

ExpressVPN scores 5/5 on streaming in our data. Its lower overall score (3.72/5) comes from ownership and transparency criteria, not from performance. At $99.95 for the first year, it’s the most expensive option.

CyberGhost: budget option with dedicated streaming servers

CyberGhost (3.58/5) labels servers by streaming service, which saves some trial and error. It has the longest money-back window in this list (45 days) and costs $47.88 for the first year. Its no-logs audit dates from 2012, which is why it scores lower on privacy.

How to set it up (Swiss or German account abroad)

1. Install the Zattoo app at home, before you travel, since Zattoo requires it.
2. Install your VPN on the same device, or on a travel router if your TV can’t run VPN apps. Our GL.iNet travel router guide shows how.
3. Connect to a server in your home country (Switzerland for Swiss accounts, Germany for German ones).
4. Close and reopen Zattoo. If you see an error, try another server in the same country.
5. Turn off iCloud Private Relay on Apple devices, which Zattoo also blocks and which can conflict with a VPN.

Which server should you pick?

Match the server to the country where your Zattoo account is registered, not to where your favourite channels come from. A Swiss account used through a German server will still be treated as “abroad”. Within the right country, pick the city closest to you geographically: Zurich or Geneva for Switzerland, Frankfurt or Berlin for Germany. If a server works one evening and fails the next, don’t fight it; switch to another one in the same country and note the ones that work.

Why Zattoo still blocks you with a VPN on

Zattoo checks more than your IP address. The usual causes:

• the VPN server’s IP is on a known data-centre list (switch servers)
• DNS requests leak your real location (run a leak test)
• the app still has your foreign location cached (clear data or reinstall)
• iCloud Private Relay is on

If none of that works, Zattoo has probably flagged that provider’s IP range. It happens with every VPN sooner or later.

Is it illegal to use a VPN with Zattoo?

No. Using a VPN is legal in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, and in most countries you’re likely to travel to. Breaking a streaming service’s terms isn’t a crime; it’s a contract issue between you and the provider. The realistic worst case is that Zattoo blocks the stream or, in theory, ends the contract. Where it does become a legal matter is if you share an account outside your household or use a VPN to reach content you haven’t paid for.
