Let’s start with what most “best VPN for Fortnite” pages won’t tell you: a VPN usually doesn’t lower your ping. It adds a stop between you and Epic’s servers, so in most cases your ping goes up a little, not down.

There are real situations where a VPN helps in Fortnite, though, and a few where it’s the only fix. Here’s how to tell which one you’re in, and which VPNs we’d use.

Quick answer: the best VPNs for Fortnite

  1. NordVPN: best overall, 5/5 speed and a huge server network
  2. Surfshark: unlimited devices for a house full of consoles
  3. ExpressVPN: fast, with good router support for consoles
  4. Proton VPN: fast and private, with a free plan for testing
  5. Private Internet Access: cheapest, with unlimited devices

How Fortnite servers and regions work

Fortnite matches you to servers by region. Epic lists eight in its competitive server guide: NA-East, NA-Central, NA-West, Europe, Brazil, Oceania, Asia and the Middle East. Epic notes that exact server locations “aren’t precise, and can shift between different locations within the same region.”

Here’s the important part: you can already change your matchmaking region yourself, without a VPN. In Fortnite, open Settings, go to the Game tab and pick a region under Matchmaking Region. If you want to play on European servers from the US, or with friends in Brazil, that’s the first thing to try.

So you don’t need a VPN to play in another region. A VPN only changes the route your traffic takes to get there.

When a VPN can lower your Fortnite ping

Ping depends on distance and on the path your data takes. Distance is fixed. The path isn’t. Internet providers sometimes route traffic badly: your packets go to a city hundreds of kilometres away before turning around, or pass through an overloaded exchange at peak time.

If that’s happening to you, a VPN server close to Epic’s servers can give your traffic a cleaner route, and your ping can drop. It’s not common, but it’s real. The only way to know is to test: check your ping in Fortnite (turn on the net debug stats in the HUD settings), connect to a VPN server near the game region, and compare.

We ran this kind of test in detail for our guide does a VPN reduce ping for gaming?. Short version: most of the time, no. Sometimes, yes, by a meaningful amount.

Other reasons to use a VPN for Fortnite

  • ISP throttling. Some providers slow down gaming or streaming traffic at peak hours. A VPN hides the type of traffic, so throttling based on it stops working.
  • Public and shared Wi-Fi. Playing on a phone or Steam Deck in a cafĂ©, hotel or dorm puts you on a network with strangers. A VPN encrypts your connection.
  • Privacy while streaming. If you stream your games, a VPN keeps your home IP address off any third-party tools or voice chat services you use alongside the game.
  • Travelling. Your normal region may give you better matches than the one nearest your hotel, and a VPN can stabilise a bad hotel connection.

What a VPN won’t do

A VPN won’t fix lag caused by your own Wi-Fi, an old router, or your PC or console. It won’t give you better hardware. And it’s not a way around a ban. Epic’s rules are clear about what gets accounts banned, and using a VPN to get around an enforcement action is a quick way to lose an account for good. We don’t recommend it and don’t cover how to do it.

For tournaments, rules are stricter than in casual play. Competitive events have their own rules on regions and eligibility, so read the official rules for the event before you connect through a VPN.

The best VPNs for Fortnite compared

All figures come from our comparison database, scored out of 5. For gaming, speed and network size matter most.

1. NordVPN: best VPN for Fortnite

NordVPN scores 5/5 on speed and has 6,274 servers in 104 countries, so you can usually find one close to the Fortnite region you play on. Its NordLynx protocol (built on WireGuard) keeps the overhead low, which is what you want for a fast-paced shooter.

It also has a feature most gamers ignore and shouldn’t: Meshnet, which lets you link devices privately for things like LAN-style play with friends. The 1-year plan is $68.85 (about $5.74 a month), and the 60-day money-back guarantee gives you plenty of time to test your ping.

2. Surfshark: best for multi-console households

If you’ve got a PC, a PS5 and a couple of phones all playing Fortnite, Surfshark’s unlimited devices make sense. It scores 5/5 on speed, has a Cure53-audited no-logs policy and costs $59.76 for the first year (about $4.98 a month).

3. ExpressVPN: fast, with strong router support

ExpressVPN also scores 5/5 on speed and has its own router app, which is the easiest way to put a console behind a VPN. It’s the priciest option here at $99.95 for the first year.

4. Proton VPN: fast and private

Proton VPN scores 5/5 on speed and 4.24/5 overall. Its free plan has no data cap, so you can check whether a VPN changes your ping before paying. You can’t choose the server on the free tier, though, so it’s only a rough test.

5. PIA: the cheapest option

PIA costs $39.95 for the first year (about $3.33 a month) and allows unlimited devices. Speed is 4/5, a step below the others, but its network is huge: 28,936 servers in 77 countries.

How to use a VPN with Fortnite

On PC

  1. Install the VPN app and pick the fastest protocol (NordLynx, WireGuard or Lightway).
  2. Connect to a server near the region you play on, not near you. For NA-East, try a server on the US East Coast. For Europe, try one in a central European country.
  3. Launch Fortnite, turn on net debug stats and compare your ping with the VPN on and off.
  4. If it’s worse, try a different city or disconnect. Don’t keep a VPN on just because you paid for it.

On PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch

Consoles don’t run VPN apps. You have three options: set the VPN up on your router, share a VPN connection from a Windows PC, or use a travel router. Our guide to the best VPN for PS5 and Xbox walks through each method, and our Nintendo Switch VPN guide covers the Switch.

On mobile

Install the VPN app on your phone, connect, then open Fortnite. On mobile networks, a VPN rarely helps ping, but it does protect you on public Wi-Fi.

Tips to cut Fortnite lag without a VPN

Before paying for anything, try these. They fix more lag than VPNs do:

  • Use Ethernet. Wi-Fi adds latency and jitter, especially through walls.
  • Pick the right matchmaking region in the Game settings.
  • Close downloads and streams on other devices in the house while you play.
  • Restart your router if it hasn’t been rebooted in weeks.
  • Lower the frame rate cap if your PC struggles. Input lag can feel like network lag.

If you play other competitive shooters, the same logic applies in our guides to the best VPN for Valorant and the best VPN for Warzone. And if raw speed is your main concern, our ranking of the fastest VPNs goes deeper on protocols and server choice.

Our verdict

A VPN won't lower your Fortnite ping in most cases, and you can already change your matchmaking region in the game settings. It helps when your provider routes traffic badly, throttles gaming at peak time, or when you play on public Wi-Fi. For those cases, NordVPN is our pick: 5/5 on speed, 6,274 servers in 104 countries and a 60-day refund window to test your own ping. Try NordVPN, compare your ping, and keep it only if it helps.
