Every winter, a lot of Canadians head south. Florida, Arizona, Mexico, Spain, Portugal. And every winter, the same thing happens the first evening: open CBC Gem, press play, and get told the show isn’t available in your region.
CBC Gem is only licensed for Canada. A VPN with Canadian servers fixes that in a few minutes. Here’s how, and which VPNs we’d use.
Quick answer: the best VPNs for CBC Gem
- NordVPN: best overall, 5/5 streaming and speed
- Surfshark: best value, unlimited devices for the whole family
- ExpressVPN: excellent for streaming, but the most expensive
- CyberGhost: cheap, with a 45-day refund window
- Private Internet Access: cheapest, with lots of North American servers
Why CBC Gem doesn’t work abroad
CBC Gem is the streaming service of CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster. According to Tom’s Guide, it “is only available to watch in Canada” because of licensing agreements. When you open it, CBC checks your IP address. A US, Mexican or European address gets blocked.
What you get when it works: CBC’s own series, a deep back catalogue (Schitt’s Creek is the classic), British dramas like Call the Midwife, and news. The basic service is free with a CBC account, which you create with an email address and a Canadian postal code. CBC Gem Premium costs CA$5.99 a month, cuts most ads and adds CBC News Network.

We don’t test CBC Gem directly, so our streaming score is based on the major services we do test (Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, HBO Max and Peacock). A VPN that gets through those reliably tends to handle smaller broadcasters’ blocks too.
1. NordVPN: best VPN for CBC Gem
NordVPN scores 5/5 on streaming, with Excellent results on Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, HBO Max and Peacock. It’s 5/5 on speed, so HD streams from a Canadian server hold up even from Florida or Europe.
It’s the top VPN in our database at 4.63/5 overall, with a PwC-audited no-logs policy and RAM-only servers. The 1-year plan is $68.85 (about $5.74 a month), and the 60-day money-back guarantee covers a good chunk of a winter away. If a Canadian server stops working, 24/7 live chat will point you to one that does.
2. Surfshark: best value for families
If the whole family is coming, Surfshark covers unlimited devices on one plan: the rental’s TV, two laptops, the tablets. It scores 4.5/5 on streaming and 5/5 on speed, with a Cure53-audited no-logs policy. The 1-year plan is $59.76 (about $4.98 a month).
3. ExpressVPN: excellent streaming, premium price
ExpressVPN gets 5/5 on streaming with Excellent results on every service we test, and it’s one of the easiest to set up on a router or a smart TV. At $99.95 for the first year, it costs noticeably more than the others.
4. CyberGhost: cheap and forgiving
CyberGhost scores 4/5 on streaming, costs $47.88 for the first year (about $3.99 a month) and offers a 45-day money-back guarantee. That longer window is handy if you’re only away for six weeks.
5. PIA: the cheapest option
PIA is the lowest-priced pick at $39.95 for the first year, with unlimited devices and a very large network (28,936 servers in 77 countries). Streaming is 3.5/5 in our tests, so expect to switch servers more often than with NordVPN.

How to watch CBC Gem abroad, step by step
- Sign up for a VPN from the list above. NordVPN is our first choice.
- Install the app on the device you’ll watch on: laptop, phone, tablet, Fire TV or Android TV.
- Connect to a server in Canada. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are the usual options.
- Clear your browser cookies, or close and reopen the CBC Gem app.
- Log in to CBC Gem and press play.
Set it all up and test it before you leave Canada if you can. Signing in to your CBC account for the first time from abroad is the step most likely to cause trouble.
On a smart TV
Samsung and LG TVs can’t run most VPN apps. Use a streaming stick that can (Fire TV or Google TV), set the VPN up on your router, or cast from a phone or laptop that’s connected to the VPN. On Apple TV, recent tvOS versions support VPN apps from providers that offer them.
Tips for snowbirds and long stays abroad
If you’re away for months rather than a week, a few habits save hassle:
- Pick a server in your home province’s biggest city. It’s usually the most reliable for Canadian services and keeps your banking app’s location consistent.
- Put the VPN on a travel router if you rent the same place each winter. Every device in the house then gets a Canadian IP without installing anything.
- Keep the app updated. Streaming blocks change during the season, and updates often include fixes.
- Watch the renewal date. Intro prices on 1-year plans usually go up at renewal, so set a reminder before the second winter.
Fixing “this content is not available in your region”
- Switch to another Canadian server. The one you’re on may be on CBC’s blocklist.
- Clear cookies and cache, or use a private browser window.
- Turn off location access for the CBC Gem app on your phone or tablet.
- Check for DNS or IPv6 leaks. If your real location leaks, CBC sees it.
- Update the VPN app and ask support for a server that works with CBC Gem.
Our guide to fixing “VPN detected” streaming errors covers each of these in more detail.
Watching other Canadian services abroad
The same method works for other Canadian streaming services, including Radio-Canada’s ICI TOU.TV for French-language TV. And if you’re a Canadian spending the winter in the US, remember the reverse problem too: your Canadian Netflix library is replaced by the American one while you’re there. Connecting to a Canadian server brings it back. See our best VPN for Netflix for which providers work best.
For everything else Canadian (banking apps, government services, privacy at home), our best VPN for Canada guide covers the bigger picture, including Canada’s Five Eyes membership.
Is it legal to watch CBC Gem with a VPN?
Using a VPN is legal in Canada, the US and most of the places Canadians go in winter. CBC Gem’s terms are based on viewers being in Canada, and the usual consequence of breaking them is that a stream won’t play. If you’re a Canadian resident travelling, you’re watching your own public broadcaster from abroad, which is about the cleanest use of a VPN there is.
CBC Gem only works in Canada, but a VPN with Canadian servers fixes that in five minutes. NordVPN is our pick: 5/5 on streaming and speed, the top overall score in our database (4.63/5), 24/7 live chat and a 60-day money-back guarantee. Surfshark is the best value for families, and CyberGhost's 45-day refund window suits a shorter trip. Get NordVPN and test it before you head south.
