NordVPN: Threat Protection Pro
NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro is the most complete option in our comparison. It blocks ads and trackers, but also scans downloaded files for malware and warns you before you land on a known phishing or malicious domain. It runs whether or not you’re connected to a VPN server, which is unusual: most competitors only filter traffic while the tunnel is active.
Threat Protection Pro is bundled into every NordVPN plan at no extra cost, which matters given how much some competitors charge for similar antivirus-adjacent bundles.
Surfshark: CleanWeb
CleanWeb blocks ads, trackers, pop-ups, and known phishing and malware domains. It’s a one-tap toggle in the app, and because Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections, CleanWeb effectively covers every device in a household once it’s enabled on the account.
In practice, CleanWeb catches most banner and video pre-roll ads on major sites, though some publishers that serve ads from the same domain as their content will still get through, which is a limitation shared by every DNS-based blocker on this list.
ProtonVPN: NetShield
NetShield is ProtonVPN’s ad and tracker blocker, with two tiers: a basic level that blocks ads and known trackers, and a stricter level that also blocks malware domains. It’s transparent about what it blocks and publishes its blocklists, which fits ProtonVPN’s broader open-source, audit-friendly approach.
NetShield is available on ProtonVPN’s paid tiers. The free plan does not include it, which is one of the trade-offs of Proton VPN Free compared to the paid service.
Windscribe: R.O.B.E.R.T
Windscribe’s R.O.B.E.R.T is the most customizable blocker in this comparison. Instead of a single on/off toggle, it offers separate blocklists for ads, trackers, malware, social media widgets, gambling sites, porn, and fake news, each of which you can enable or disable independently. It’s a strong pick if you want granular control rather than a one-size-fits-all filter.
Mullvad: DNS content blockers
Mullvad’s blockers live in the app settings as simple toggles for ads, trackers, social media content, and malware. They’re not as polished as NordVPN’s or Surfshark’s dashboards, but Mullvad’s overall privacy-first design (no account email, cash payment accepted) means the blocker fits the same philosophy: functional, no telemetry, no upsell.
Who doesn’t have one
ExpressVPN and IPVanish do not include a built-in ad or tracker blocker as of 2026. For ExpressVPN specifically, this is a notable gap given its otherwise strong feature set and premium pricing; if a bundled ad blocker matters to you, NordVPN or Surfshark deliver more for a lower monthly cost. IPVanish’s absence is less surprising given its overall lower privacy-feature score in our database.
CyberGhost and Private Internet Access: solid, if less flexible
CyberGhost’s built-in ad and tracker blocker is a straightforward toggle with no separate branding or granular categories. It does the job of stripping most banner and video ads across apps, and CyberGhost bundles it into every plan, including its cheaper long-term pricing tiers. It’s a good fit if you want the protection without needing to configure anything further.
Private Internet Access calls its version MACE, and it works the same way as the others: DNS-level blocking of ad, tracking, and malware domains. PIA’s implementation has been in the product for years and is stable, though its interface is less polished than NordVPN’s or Surfshark’s. For PIA users who already picked the service for its no-logs track record and server count, MACE is a reasonable bonus rather than a primary selling point.
Does an ad blocker actually save data and battery on mobile?
Yes, to a meaningful degree. Blocking ad and tracking requests before they load means your device isn’t downloading ad creative, video pre-rolls, or the tracking scripts that run in the background on many ad-heavy sites and apps. On mobile, that translates to less data consumed per session and less background CPU activity from scripts you never see, which in turn means better battery life over a full day of use. It’s not going to double your battery life, but on ad-heavy news or content apps, the difference is noticeable enough that some users report it as a side benefit that matters as much as the privacy angle.
How we tested for this comparison
We visited a set of ad-heavy news and content sites with each VPN’s blocker enabled at default settings, and separately with it disabled, and counted how many ad and tracker requests were blocked using browser developer tools. We also checked each provider’s own documentation and blocklist transparency (some publish their blocklists, others don’t) as part of the score, since a blocker that doesn’t disclose what it blocks or allows through is harder to trust at face value.
DNS blocker vs. browser extension: do you need both?
A VPN’s DNS-level blocker and a browser extension like uBlock Origin solve overlapping but different problems. The DNS blocker works across your entire device, including apps that don’t support browser extensions, and it blocks connections before they’re made. A browser extension inspects the actual page content and can strip out ad slots and cosmetic elements the DNS blocker lets load because they share a domain with legitimate content.
If you’re already running a browser extension, a VPN’s ad blocker still adds value on mobile apps and non-browser traffic. If you’re not running anything, the VPN’s built-in option is a meaningful upgrade over nothing, even if it won’t catch 100% of in-page ads on every site.
