Every VPN in our database is scored across five themes: Performance and Network (speed, protocols, server infrastructure), Security and Privacy (encryption, leak protection, jurisdiction, no-logs audit), Transparency and Trust (ethics, ownership disclosure, bug bounty), Pricing, and Features and UX (streaming, ad-blocking, bypass capabilities, customer support).
Scores run from 0 to 5 per criterion. The overall score is the weighted average across all categories.

Speed is excellent: one of the fastest VPNs in 2026, with minimal download speed reduction in our tests. Streaming is solid for Netflix and Disney+ but not perfect across all platforms.

Mullvad: best for anonymity

Mullvad is for users who want to leave the smallest possible footprint. No email required to sign up. You get a randomly generated account number. Payment can be made in cash by mail, in Monero, or in Bitcoin. No personal data is ever collected.
Swedish jurisdiction (inside 14 Eyes on paper) but their no-logs policy has been court-tested: Swedish police raided Mullvad’s offices in 2023 and left with nothing because there was nothing to take. That’s more convincing than any audit.
The trade-off: Mullvad scores 0/5 on streaming (it does not maintain streaming-optimized servers and Netflix actively blocks its IPs). If streaming matters to you, Mullvad is not the right choice.
Price: flat $5.86/month regardless of plan length. No long-term discounts, which some users appreciate for its transparency.
Surfshark: best value

Surfshark’s value proposition is simple: unlimited device connections at one of the lowest prices on the market, with solid privacy and streaming credentials.
Netherlands jurisdiction (Nine Eyes) is the main privacy caveat. Its no-logs audit (Cure53) is solid but doesn’t yet match NordVPN’s six consecutive Deloitte assessments. No bug bounty program.
Where Surfshark stands out: the only VPN that lets you run it on every device you own simultaneously, with no limit. For families or households with many devices, this changes the calculus entirely.

ExpressVPN: best interface, weakest value

ExpressVPN has the cleanest apps and the simplest setup of any VPN we tested. British Virgin Islands jurisdiction is solid. Streaming performance is excellent across all major platforms.
The problem is price. At roughly $8.33/month on a one-year plan, it costs nearly twice as much as NordVPN for comparable performance. It also has fewer servers (location count undisclosed since 2024) and no bug bounty. Hard to recommend at that price when NordVPN and ProtonVPN both outperform it at lower cost.
CyberGhost: best dedicated streaming servers
Score: 3.5/5
CyberGhost’s streaming approach is unique: dedicated servers labeled by platform and region (Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, etc.) that are regularly refreshed. This works well when maintained, and it usually is for the major platforms.
Romanian jurisdiction is privacy-friendly. The 45-day money-back guarantee is the longest of any VPN we tested.
The weaknesses: owned by Kape Technologies, a company with a controversial history in the adware industry. Transparency score (0/5 on bug bounty) is low. Speed is good but not exceptional.
Private Internet Access: most servers, US-based

PIA has over 18,000 servers, by far the largest network of any VPN. It’s open-source, independently audited, and one of the cheapest options available at around $3.33/month on a long-term plan.
The catch: US jurisdiction. PIA has received court orders and complied (though they maintain they log nothing and had nothing to hand over). For users in high-risk situations, US-based infrastructure is a meaningful risk factor.
For everyday privacy and streaming from a country with less legal risk, PIA is a solid budget pick.
What to avoid
VPNs that score below 3.0 in our ranking typically share the same problems: weak or non-existent no-logs audits, opaque ownership structures, poor streaming support, or data caps that make them impractical. Notable ones to skip: Hola (sold user bandwidth to a botnet), Betternet (malware found in audits), and any VPN that doesn’t publish a clear privacy policy.
For most users, NordVPN is the right answer in 2026. It leads on every criterion that matters: speed, streaming, privacy infrastructure, and audit history. If privacy is your main concern and you don't need streaming, ProtonVPN or Mullvad are stronger picks. If budget is the deciding factor, Surfshark or PIA offer solid protection at lower cost.
